Dans or not

J’habite une maison or j’habite dans une maison. I see the first one written but say the second. Am I wrong? Is it possible to use both?

Actually, both is possible:

J'habite dans une grande maison. -- I live in a big house.
J'habite une grande maison. -- I live in a big house (lit.: I inhabit a big house).

You are meant to use J’habite dans une maison as it it generally translated as I live in a house. It is worth noting dans is translated as ‘in’
