'Des' in 'la plus étrange des années'

Why is it 'des' and not 'd'' (since it means 'of years' and not 'of the years')?

I think this is likely:

Années is used in a “general” sense - les années. Article required in French, and then the contraction of de + les. 

It wouldn’t really make sense to say it was the strangest of some years.
