Is le présent the same as le présent indicatif? If so, why do you switch between them in a single lesson? It confuses me. Thank you.

Hi Susan,
Yes, it is the present tense in the indicative mood. You won't meet any other present tenses until you will learn other moods like the conditional for instance.
