Basically instead of verb + à + someone. It’s covered well in the linked lesson: Using lui/leur = him or her/them (French Indirect Object Pronouns) -.
What’s a little confusing for learners is that both lui and leur have alternative functions: lui as a stress pronoun (chez lui, masculine only) and leur as a possessive plural pronoun (leur chien, their dog). However when lui and leur are indirect object pronouns they're placed between subject and verb and usually immediately before the verb.
