How will I know when "the" can be replaced with "au". Finding this a bit confusing.

Hi Melanie,

"au" is actually a contraction of the preposition "à" with the article "le": à+le = au.

Tu vois le carrefour? -- Do you see the crossroads?
Je vais au travail. (à le = au) -- I am going to work.
