Is fait maison invariable?

I notice fait maison does not agree with the feminine noun. Is it a fixed expression?

Hi Tom,

Both can be said, whether you think of the set expression -

home-made = fait maison

or

if you agree the past participle with what it refers to, here une crême brûlée

une crême brûlée fait/e maison

and both answers are given as possibilities.

Good question!

Hope this helps!

I don't know the context, but fait(e) maison respects the gender of the thing that's homemade:

Le pain est fait maison? -- Is the bread homemade?
Oui, cette confiture est faite maison. -- Yes, this jam is homemade.
