Why does "de" mean "in" here?

Hi James, 

If the sentence had been -

Ma grand-mère avait les plus beaux rosiers du village My grandmother had the most beautiful rosebushes in the village 

It might make more sense to you.

 It is just that we say 'de'  = of

rather than 'in' as in English.
