Present participle?

Question

I'm confused. Doesn't ..ing in English denote the present participle? In French that would suggest "leaving" would be expressed as "partant", "talking" as "parlant" etc; not the  use of the infinitive.

Infinitives and present participles in English do not follow the same rules of usage as their French counterparts. Just another grammatical difference between the 2 languages.
