"Ginger" can be used as an insult in the UK (sadly), and some would deem it offensive.
"Red-haired" and "redhead" are better than "ginger"

Indeed :) My own beloved husband is a "ginger", so I must admit that I never use the term in a derogatory manner, but I agree that it can also be used this way. I've therefore updated the question accordingly.
I should have remembered Tim Minchin's awesome song Prejudice ;)
