"Tous les médias s'en sont donné à cœur joie...."

Question

J'avoue que je suis  toujours un peu brouillard au suject des circonstances dans lesquelles une verbe réflexive ne crée pas d'accord avec le participe passé, mais, pour moi, il ne semble pas d'y être un COD de plus.... donc je ne comprends pas pourquoi il n'est pas "Tous les médias s'en sont donnés à cœur joie...."

In the sentence "tous les médias s'en sont donné à cœur joie, the past participle 'donné' remains invariable (doesn't agree).
Here's why:
This is a pronominal (reflexive) verb construction with "se donner à cœur joie" (to have a great time, to have a field day). The key is to identify what 'en' and 'se' represent:
- en is the direct object representing 'de cela' ( of that) 
- se here is an indirect object  à eux-mêmes  (to themselves) 
 
The rule: Past participles of pronominal verbs agree with the direct object only when it precedes the verb. Since "se" is indirect here (not direct), there's no agreement.

If the direct object is en, then it does precede the verb here. Good point Alan,Although I would argue that here, 'en' is idiomatic and doesn't replace anything in particular.
