tout or tous
Bonjour Oliver,
1. You will use "tout" when it means "everything":
Tout est parfait ! = Everything is perfect!
J'entends tout = I can hear everything
2. You will use :
- tout/tous + [article ] + [masculine word]
Mona et Léa ont préparé tout le repas = Mona and Léa prepared the whole meal
Ils ont mangé tous les biscuits = They ate all the biscuits
- toute/toutes + [article] + [feminine word]
Je connais toute l'histoire par cœur = I know the whole story by heart
J'ai rangé toutes tes serviettes de bain = I put away all your bath towels
3. You will use "tous/toutes" when it means "all" :
Mes amis (masculine plural) sont là. Ils sont tous gentils = My friends are here. They are all nice
Mes amies (feminine plural) sont là. Elles sont toutes gentilles = My are all here. They are all nice
Mes amis (masculine plural) sont venus et tous étaient contents = My friends came and they were all happy (lit: all were happy)
Mes amies (feminine plural) sont venues et toutes étaient contentes = My friends came and they were all happy (lit: all were happy)
I hope this is helpful.
Bonne journée !
