Translation of "Je tins la robe avant d'aller à la soirée."

Question

I think a better translation for: "Je tins la robe avant d'aller à la soirée." is , "I wore the dress before going to the soiré" the "correct" translation, "I held the dress before going to the soiré" makes little sense, the response could only be, "Oh?".

agree that as a stand-alone sentence it sounds a bit odd at first reading. It is just a ‘fragment’ of a story, not the complete tale.

Context would be needed to fully understand the situation - but ‘held’ the dress ‘for someone’ or ‘for some reason’ or ‘for some time’ etc are all possible bits of additional information that would confirm the translation.

I don’t know and can’t find any usage/meaning of ‘tenir’ that gives the translation ‘wore’ instead. Have you seen this translation/usage elsewhere ?
