Use of l'imparfait

Why is pouvoir in the phrase, "...but my parents told me that we can only keep one..." translated as "nous pouvions" rather than "nous pouvons" ? ie. The use of the l'imparfait rather than the present tense.

I know that we used "voulais" earlier in the sentence, but that was expressed as the past, "I wanted to keep...".  Does the use of the l'imparfait earlier in the sentences necessitate the use of the l'imparfait with "pouvoir" also?

Merci !

Hi Shamrockhill,

The verb 'dire que' does introduce the reported/indirect speech which involves changing tenses in French.

Mes parents m'ont dit :" nous ne pouvons garder qu'un bout de chou" = My parents told me : " we can only keep one little guy " (direct speechpouvoir in the présent

In reported/indirect speech the présent becomes imparfait -

Mes parents m'ont dit que nous ne pouvions garder qu'un bout de chou

This extract is from a draft lesson I worked on :

Basic changes from direct to indirect

Présent ----> Imparfait
Passé composé -----> Plus-que-parfait
Imparfait ----> Imparfait    (no change)

Plus-que-parfait———> Plus-que-parfait (no change)

Futur ----> Conditionnel
Futur antérieur———-> Conditionnel passé (rare)

Conditionnel Présent ----> Conditionnel présent (no change)

Conditionnel passé ———-> Conditionnel passé (no change)

Est-ce que? -----> Si
Que …? ———-> ce que

Qu’est-ce que ———> ce que

Qu’est ce qui ———-> ce qui

Look at the following dialogue between three people, one hard of hearing -

Hope this helps!

This is reported speech. Here's how it works:

He tells me that Marie is reading. -- Il me dit que Marie lit.
He told me that Marie was reading. -- Il m'a dit que Marie lisait.

By changing the reported speech from present tense (He tells me...) to past tense (He told me...) the second half changes from present tense (Marie lit) to imperfect tense (Marie lisait). Actually, the tenses used in reported speech follow the same pattern in English as they do in French. Strictly speaking it should be:

My parents told me that we could only keep one. -- Mes parents m'ont dit que nous ne pouvions garder qu'un.
