verbs ending in ayer in present tense

Why do we sometimes conjugate with the "y" and other times the "y" becomes an"i"?

Bonjour Pamela,

This is mainly due to a pronunciation issue:

paiions -> you would have to pronounce two "-i", which would sound odd in French ; hence, the -y.

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
