When should we use COD, and when to use ça?

"Oh! J'ai regardé ça aussi hier."

Or 

"Oh Je l'ai regardé aussi hier"

It's pretty similar to English: ça=demonstrative pronoun ("that"), le=personal pronoun ("it").

J'ai regardé ça. -- I saw that.
Je l'ai regardé. -- I saw it.
