Why is the imperfect wrong here? We don't know from the English whether it was a one off or a repeated action

Karen,

That doesn't look incorrect to me - "Marc only ever played football."

If it was a one-off (Marc only played football once), I would be inclined to say:

Marc n'a joué au foot qu'une fois.

[Non-native speaker so apologies in advance if I get corrected!].
