Why not 'palais'?

Can we not translate 'palace' by 'palais'?

Hi Charles, 

Even Versailles ( my home turf) is called :

Le château de Versailles

we also talk of

'les châteaux de la Loire" ...

I think they say that in France if the palace is in the countryside it's a chateau; if it's in the city (like the Tuileries) it's a palais...

Why not 'palais'?

Can we not translate 'palace' by 'palais'?
