why subjunctif "mes parents m'aient fait,"

Why is the subjunctive past used in "le plus beau cadeau que mes parents m'aient fait"? Seems to me the subjunctive is not necessary.

Bonjour Carl,

Although I haven't carried out the exercise, I have the sense of emotion being expressed, and I suspect this is why the subjunctive mood is appropriate.
