Can someone explain why drôle is used like it is in this phrase: “ font de drôles de bruits” instead of like other adjectives?

Hi Debbie,

This is a very interesting question as these kinds of idiomatic expressions can fall through the net.

The expression 'faire de drôles de bruits' will simply translate as 'making funny (kind of) noise'.

Take a look at the following page and in particular "Expressions - drôle de " :

https://www.larousse.fr/dictionnaires/francais/dr%C3%B4le/26853#:~:text=Dr%C3%B4le%20de%2C,pour%20faire%20tout%20ce%20travail%20!

You could say for instance -

C'est une drôle d'affaire ! = That's a funny kind of business

Il a un drôle d'air celui-là = This man looks very odd

C'est un drôle de mot It's a funny old word

J'ai un drôle de pressentiment = I have an odd premonition

etc.

 Hope this helps!
