hypothèque?

I translated mortgage as "hypothèque" but that wasn't one of the accepted answers. What's the difference between hypothèque and emprunt immobilier?

I am not a financial expert and I have always asked myself this question.
The system is probably different in some countries but if you say in French -
J'ai hypothéqué ma maison 
it means that you are borrowing against the value of that asset. so it is more of a secured loan.
To buy a house in France you would arrange 'un emprunt immobilier'.

I guess the difference is this:un emprunt immobilier -- a loan for buying a hose, secured by other means than the houseune hypothéque -- a loan with the house as security
