Use of "de" with an adjective

I know that this phrase is incorrect: "Le bâtiment d'ancien où mes parents habitaient", but I also know that sometimes "de" is used with an adjective in similar phrases.

What is the rule about whether to add "de" to an adjective?

It doesn't work here, Harry as you rightly say.

Are you thinking of after quelque chose de / rien de ?

J'ai quelque chose d'important à te dire = I have something important to tell you

Il est arrivé quelque chose de grave hier = Something very serious happened yesterday
