Why do I need to rate myself all the time?

I don't think its necessary to keep rating myself , tbh I could give myself a smiley face but it makes no difference to learning french !

You don't have to rate yourself. Just give yourself a smiley face, as you suggest. However, for some people it does make a difference, and they can track their progress if they do rate themselves. It's up to you.
