What’s new: comprehension exercises

comprehension question sample

Every Interactive Reader now ends with a comprehension exercise, so you can check how much of the text you really took in. Read the text (with or without grammar hints), then click “Start comprehension exercise” and answer a few questions about what happened, who did what and why.

You answer in English, on purpose: this exercise checks your understanding only, not your spelling or grammar. For each answer you’ll see whether you got it, partly got it or missed it, along with what the text actually said. The questions match the CEFR level of the Reader, so pick your level or go up a notch for a challenge.

As a Premium member, you have full access to comprehension exercises across the whole library of Interactive Readers.

How do challenges and dictations work?

Writing challenges and dictations are self-scoring exercises, meaning that for each phrase you’ll be offered corrections to help you pinpoint your mistakes, but the marking is up to you!

Once you’re done, you can read and listen to the full text in French, and also see a list of grammar topics covered in the exercise.

Comprehension exercises work a little differently: you answer in English and get instant feedback on each answer, so you know exactly which parts of the text you understood.

Remember if you want to kwiz any of the lessons again, you can add them to your notebook(s).

Author info

Aurélie Drouard

Aurélie is our resident French Expert. She has created most of the wonderful content you see on the site and is usually the person answering your tricky help questions. She comes from a small village near Chartres in Central France, country of cereal fields and not much else. She left (in a hurry) to study English at the world-famous Sorbonne in Paris, before leaving France in 2007 to experience the “London lifestyle” - and never looked back! She's worked as a professional French teacher, translator and linguist in the UK since.  She loves to share her love of languages and is a self-professed cinema and literature geek!

Céline Pickard

For over ten years now, Céline has been teaching French and Italian to students of all ages and abilities in the UK. This French native speaker comes from Brittany, and likes crafts, Breton dance (of course!) and Breton music which she actually played for four years. She also has a fondness for European cinema and British History.
