i understand that it must be sortir de plus place to mean to leave/ go out but what does sortir without de mean and how is it used?
The verb sortir on its own means to go out -
Ce soir, nous sortons vers 21 h = Tonight, we are going out at about 9 PM
Elle sort avec mon cousin = She is going out with my cousin
En hiver, je sors rarement le soir = In the winter, I go out rarely at night
Hope this helps!
Sortir can also mean "to take something outside" if used transitively.
Il ne sort jamais la poubelle. -- He never takes out the trash.
