When can you use "à partir de" instead of "de"?

When can you use "à partir de" instead of "de"?

I've used the Kwiziq library search to try and find a lesson (or any information) on how to use "à partir de", but no luck. For example, can a translation of "from the 24th of July to the 5th of August" be "à partir du 24 juillet au 5 août" as well as "du 24 juillet au 5 août"? What's the rule for using  "à partir de"?

And why isn't the rule included in this lesson?

Hi Harry,

The expression 'à partir de' really means 'starting from' rather than just plain old 'from'.

So you might say -

Vous pouvez faire votre demande à partir du 1er janvier 2024 = You can submit your claim (starting) from the 1st January 2024

but if you are talking about a specific period you will use

du ------ au  = from ------ to

just as in your examples.

Hope this helps!

Well, no-one has responded yet, so here's a link. Scroll down and look at the tables to see usage of prepositions. Maybe it will help? If not, I apologize.
