Susan suggested a great mnemonic not to mix up être and faire in the passé simple :"faire has an "i," être does not, so the passé simple of faire would have an "i," and the passé simple of être would not. It's a bit simplistic, but it helped me keep the two verbs straight until I didn't have to think about which was which any more."

Pas mal de ...Bonjour, I've heard that one can use "pas mal de ..." to indicate "quite a lot", and I just want to confirm this is correct. For example: "Il y avait pas mal de monde à la fête". Merci ! Kathy

au sous-sol.I understand that we use être w hen certain verbs are followed by a preposition but isn't 'au' as in 'J'ai descendu les boîtes au sous-sol.', a preposition or have I got that wrong - again!

In the sentencenous avons ouvert les fenêtres de peur qu'il n'y ait un fuite de gas.In the sentence, which may not be exactly correct, but is more or les as i remeber it, the translatio is ....for frar that there would be a gas leak. Can this be translated as might be or even as there is a gas leak. Like many english people i am a bit hazy about the subjunctive in my own language, hence the question.

Use of imparfaitIn this week's writing challenge we had ".. I've received a letter from your company. It notified me that .." -> "J'ai reçu une lettre de votre compagnie. Elle m'informait que ..." How can we know that this is better than " Elle m'a informé que ..."

The position of "prochain/prochaine", relative to nouns.In the following sentence from a quizz: Aujourd'hui, les fantômes ________(choisissent) leur prochaine victime. - Why is "prochaine" positioned before the noun, please? Yet, if we say "next week", we say: "la semaine prochaine". Cheryl

What is the meaning of "Aurélie n'est qu'allée au marché"? The above is one of the questions in the B1 Kwiz test. I just cannot understand the difference between the answers:- Aurélie only went to the market (and did nothing else) or (and went nowhere else)? I've tried reading the explanation page over and over but I don't see the difference between - and did nothing else and went nowhere else!!! Can someone make it simpler for a simple brain perhaps??
