“Would” causing confusion “We would gather at the … table”
translates to:
On se retrouvait à la table…
On se rassemblait à la table…
On se réunissait à la table…
How is the “would” in “We would gather” reflected here? How is this different from “we gathered”, “we used to gather”, or “we were gathering”?
Same thing with “and we'd devour …” translating to “et on dévorait…”.
The French imparfait seems natural here. Maybe it’s really the function of the English word “would” that’s confusing me when trying to analyse it. It’s the same word as the conditional “would”, but this is not conditional. It’s not the main verb, e.g. “to gather”. It’s almost like an English imperfect version of “to be”.

How to use negation with futur proche?
HI was wondering when I took the test the sentence un orgre grand comme un maison was said to be correct but, I thought grand would go before ogre.
Thanks
Nicole
If On is used to say we as a group with which you're familiar with and are part of, does that mean saying it for other groups or just random groups of people means it becomes "One Or People" ? And do French speakers receive it as so ?
Why is the imperfect used in the phrase "si je pouvais remonter le temps" rather than the conditional?
About 'face the facts', is it also correct to translate it as ' faire face aux réalités'.
I think 'faire face à ' is a very common expression.
Hi can someone tell me the different meanings between these two sentences
elle n'a embrassé qu'Alexandre
elle n'a qu'embrassé Alexandre
and in an example given at the top of the page why the meaning was not explained within brackets like the other examples above and below it.
Nous n'avons regardé qu'un film.Should it of said Nous n'avons regardé qu'un film (and watched nothing else)
