In this sentence although the comparative form of 'bien' has been used but then also ' que' has not been used;though here 'mieux' is I think has been used as an adjective.

I thought se coucher means "to go to bed" so it should not be necessary also to use the verb aller!

A small point about the explanation of the conjugation pattern of these verbs"In L'imparfait, almost all verbs conjugate in the same way, but verbs ending in -ger require a slight spelling change - an extra 'e' after the soft 'g' - to keep the pronunciation." Since the first-person plural form of 'manger' is 'mangeons', the root is 'mange-'. Isn't it more accurate to say that there is not an extra 'e', but that the 'e' is omitted in 'nous mangions' and 'vous mangiez'?
