ait vs soitI don't understand why "for fear there will be a gas leak" uses "ait" instead of "soit" -- what's the general rule? I know a person "has" hunger or thirst but in this case there's no person involved...

Passé simple vs. Imparfait"During that time, I was very busy." is translated using le Passé simple. However, would not l'Imparfait be more appropriate here, given that it is a statement about a longer period of time? -- Chris.

It's about le Futur and le Futur antérieur.The English sentence is: "Marie will meet up with us when we leave the restaurant." In the answer you use le Futur antérieur: "...quand nous aurons quitté..." In English, this would, to me, rather be "...after having left...". Since here it is "...when leaving..." a more simulaneous connection is implied. Would it, hence, be ok to translate it as: 'Marie nous rejoindra quand nos quitterons le restaurant." Thanks, -- Chris.

I'm a bit confused by what "on their own" means,especially when, in an example, "le jour suivant" isn't used on its own. I read the Q&A, and I'm still confused. Which sentence structures are correct for which phrases?

English vs American EnglishI find it amusing from this side of the pond. It is not good English here to say he's got a brother, he has a brother is more proper to the tongue. We ask how many siblings do you have? not have you got? Just usage, neither wrong. There are numerous expressions I see you Brits use and we don't!

Après avoir/êtreAll of the examples I've seen with après avoir/être + past particple are followed by another action in the past tense e.g. 'après avoir lu mon livre, je suis allé au lit'. However, can the comstruction be used with a second action in the present tense? e.g. 'après avoir lu mon livre, je vais au lit' to mean 'after reading my book, I go to bed'.

Kinds of "en"In a quiz for another topic we were supposed to make imperative of "Tu n'en parles pas" and it was incorrect to write "Ne parles-en pas !" like in this topic. Are these two kinds of "en"? How does one tell the difference?
