imparfait vs. en train de I echo Meghna's last question: The correct answer is ´J'ai frappé à la porte, mais tu étais en train de dormir.´. Could I say this as j'ai frappé ..... mais tu dormais?

Examples 8 & 10 - why is "mieux" being used and not "meilleur"?Doesn't the use of the verb "etre" indicate a state of being rather than an action, and hence shouldnt meilleur be used instead of mieux?

Definite articles with "de"This is probably a hopeless question, but why do masculine countries require an article with "de" whereas feminine ones do not? Why not "Je viens de la France"?

"It is not necessary that"

(I'm afraid I can't remember the French question, but this was how I read it in English.)Why is this in the subjunctive? It seems to me to be a fact that the obligation is not needed. Thanks for the explanation.

Celui or le mienJ'aime ton chien mais je préfère ________ que j'ai adopté. I love your dog but I prefer the one I adopted. celui (program correct response) le mien (my response) So given this question, I chose «le mien» since the questioned required a typed in response but the correct answer according to the program is «celui»; however, to me «le mien» is also a correct response. Can you please explain the reason it would not be correct? Merci en avance.

les livres or des livres

I still don't understand why you use les livres instead of des livres for a statement

J'adore_________ livres. I thought that le/la and les is used for specific thing. please clarify.

CinquièmeI think it would be useful to note in the lesson another small exception to the rule on forming the ordinal numbers. Namely, 'cinq' becomes 'cinquième' rather than 'cinqième'. No big deal, but I just wanted to mention it.
