Pronunciation of 'je suis à'

Is it right that you don't pronounce the 'S' at the end of 'suis' when it's followed by 'à'?

I had thought anytime a vowel sound follows a word ending in 's', you pronounce that s. Like with 'Je dine dans une...'

I have never seen "merci pour". From my knowledge, merci or remerci is followed by "de". Please provide further explanation on this topic or Is there a lesson on this within Kwizqi?

Does this convention only work when talking about full thousands/millions/billions? What if you want to say 12,505 things or 1,350,000 things?

In lesson for 'ne explitif'"Évitons que la situation ne dégénère !Let's avoid the situation getting worse!" appears. Instead of 'avoid' wouldn't 'prevent be better, or is avoid maybe used in Britain to an extent?-- I'm American, and the latter sounds more natural to me.
