Why is this correct? (Qu'est-ce que c'est vs. quel est...)I asked about this previously and I am still confused.
I did a quiz before and it asked how you would ask "what is this" or something to that effect. And it didn't accept "quelle est..." as the correct answer.
The answer I had received is that quelle needs to be followed by a noun. However, previously, my French teachers would say questions like "Quelle est la date?", so I was very confused. Is that phrase incorrect?
Furthermore, I was doing another quiz and got this question:
Quel est le nom ___ restaurant ?
And I was confused why you could ask "what is the name of the restaurant" and use "quel est" and not "qu'est-ce que c'est" or "c'est quoi".
Basically, I'm not understanding if/when you can use "quel est.." or "quelle est..".
Thank you!
i'm Scottish and "passer un exam" would be translated as "to sit an exam", so "Vous avez passé votre examen" to my mind would be "You sat your exam".
Just commenting :-)
Really useful rules & exceptions lists to help structure my thinking. Thanks.
Like everyone else, I find this lesson very confusing, and I think it is because it's using a very poor example of when to use articles. I believe the translation is incorrect.
Je n'aime ni le fromage ni le lait.
I like neither cheese nor milk.
If this example is talking about specific cheese and specific milk, then the English translation should be, "I like neither the cheese nor the milk." But that is not what you have here. The translation you give is general, not specific. It really makes the whole lesson contradictory and confusing.
Mon text est en anglais. Je veux le voir en français. Comme je fais ça? Merci
trying to make sense of these rules.. it seems to go like this:

In the writing challenge "My mother's favourite singer"
the question
"how much his music means to my mother"
is translated using "compte" or "représente" but couldn't the verb "signifie" also be correct?
