Why can’t merci de  venir be translated as thanks for coming?

Is there a reason "he'll be back" is translated once as "il sera de retour" and once as "il sera revenu"? Or are they simply alternatives?

Hi, why in this phrase  (le tatin de légumes) they used ´de and not aux légumes? 

What is the reason why the repeat the words like vous in "vous vous appelez?" Is there any history about it? Im just curious, thank you.

In the text it says:

que consommait la population pauvre de Bretagne

The translation says:

The French seems to say:

that was eaten the poor population of Brittany

If the English translation is right, then the population is the subject in which case the verb subject order should be different, or, the French actually  says "that was eaten by the poor population of Brittany" and so it should say 

que consommait par la population pauvre ...

Il faut que je vous recommande l’appreniez le français, car c’est très intéressant et ça vous ouvre l’esprit. Ensuite, lorsque vous alliez en France, vous pouvez parler leur langue maternelle et avoir aussi une meilleure connaissance de leur culture. Ce serait une expérience incroyable.

Pour quelle raison c'est « nous les avons laissé faire connaissance » et pas « nous les avons laissés faire connaissance » ? « Laissés » doit être pluriel parce que l'objet direct est avant le verbe, n'est-ce pas? 

I enjoy these weekly writing challenges and learn a lot through them.  Still, I become a little frustrated when it becomes evident that I have chosen different  French translations for the suggested English words presented.  My choices may be fine synonyms at best, but the  concern is that they aren't really the best words for those contexts.  I recognize the value of looking things up ourselves,
but would it be possible to provide the exact French vocabulary we are to learn for these exercises instead of the English?
