How can you distinguish "le costume" form "les costumes" while listening. It sounds the same for me.

I'm leaving my place.so i wrote quatre heures de l'apres midi and it marked wrong, told it shoulb be seize heures. when i used 24 hour clock was told it only for railway etc timetables, please what is right?
This was a question in the test and I chose the passé composé answer "Nous avons appris l'espagnol." because the action has no effect on the present. But the answer key said the imparfait answer "Nous apprenions l'espagnol." is correct choice. Why is that?
