In this “Qui est-ce ?” podcast series, Kwiziq’s own super detectives Aurélie and Céline will test your investigative skills as they give you clues (en français bien sûr !) to guess a famous Francophone personality. And to help you practise your listening skills, these podcasts will be accompanied by some useful vocab, grammar lessons, and interesting links to go further! Bonne enquête !

Here’s some useful vocabulary featured in this podcast to help you conduct your investigation:

  • un siècle = a century
  • un titre de citoyen d’honneur = title of honorary citizen

  • Les États-Unis = The USA
  • Le roi de France Louis XVI = French king Louis XVI
  • “La Victoire” = (“The Victory”, ship bought by our mystery man)
  • L’Atlantique = the Atlantic Ocean
  • Le général George Washington
  • La Bataille de Yorktown = the Battle of Yorktown
  • Les Britanniques = the British
  • La Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen = Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

 

🗒️🕵️‍♂️ Your Clue Notepad + Your Grammar Notebook

 

1. C’est un aristocrate, militaire et homme politique français né au XVIIIe siècle dans une riche famille d’Auvergne.

2. C’est une des très rares personnes à avoir reçu le titre de citoyen d’honneur des États-Unis à titre posthume.

3. Contre les ordres du roi de France Louis XVI, il a acheté un navire appelé “La Victoire” pour traverser l’Atlantique.

4. Aux États-Unis, c’est devenu un ami très proche et un collaborateur direct du général George Washington.

5. Il a joué un rôle décisif lors de la Bataille de Yorktown en 1781, qui a permis la victoire finale des insurgés américains contre les Britanniques.

6. De retour en France, il a participé activement à la Révolution française et il a rédigé la première version de la Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen en 1789.

7. On le surnomme “Le Héros des Deux Mondes” en raison de son rôle majeur dans les révolutions américaine et française.

8. Son nom de famille est associé aux célèbres Galeries marchandes de Paris.

For over ten years now, Céline has been teaching French and Italian to students of all ages and abilities in the UK. This French native speaker comes from Brittany, and likes crafts, Breton dance (of course!) and Breton music which she actually played for four years. She also has a fondness for European cinema and British History.

Je crois que cet homme est le Marquis de Lafayette. Par coïncidence, je viens de terminer un roman sur la Révolution française, et le Marquis de Lafayette était un personnage important de cette époque.
Et j'étais ravie d'entendre mon nom (je crois !).
