Here’s some useful vocabulary featured in this podcast to help you conduct your investigation:

  • faire un coucou à [quelqu’un] = to say hi / send a shout-out to [someone]
  • un domaine d’investigation = an area of investigation
  • aborder [un sujet] = to tackle / address [a topic]
  • ça va en intéresser plus d’un ! = it will interest more than a few!
  • marquer [quelque chose] = to leave one’s mark on [something]
  • un calepin = a notepad
  • une femme d’affaires = a businesswoman
  • visionnaire = visionary
  • un siècle = a century
  • devenir veuve = to become a widow
  • sans l’accord de [quelqu’un] = without [someone’s] consent/approval
  • avoir un lien avec = to be linked to
  • reprendre une entreprise = to take over a company
  • un mari défunt = a late husband
  • développer [quelque chose] à l’international = to expand [something] internationally
  • une innovatrice = innovator (f)
  • une table de remuage = a riddling table (champagne rack)
  • limpide = crystal-clear / limpid
  • un champagne millésimé = a vintage champagne
  • en raison de … = because of …
  • surnommer [quelqu’un] = to nickname [someone]
  • une étiquette = a label
  • un amateur de [quelque chose] = a fan/lover of [something]
  • un nom de jeune fille = a maiden name
  • avoir hâte de [faire] = can’t wait to [do]

Proper Nouns:

  • Le Code civil = The French Civil Code
  • La Champagne (wine region in northeastern France)
  • Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin = (maiden name of our mystery woman)

 

🗒️🕵️‍♂️ Your Clue Notepad + Your Grammar Notebook

 

1. C’est une femme d’affaires française visionnaire, née à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

2. Elle est devenue veuve à seulement 27 ans, à une époque où le Code civil interdisait aux femmes de travailler sans l’accord d’un mari.

3. Elle a repris la direction de l’entreprise familiale de son défunt mari et elle a développé son commerce à l’international.

4. C’est une grande innovatrice : elle a inventé en 1816 la “table de remuage”, une technique révolutionnaire pour obtenir un vin parfaitement clair et limpide.

5. On lui doit aussi la création du premier champagne millésimé en 1810.

6. En raison de son succès dans un monde d’hommes, on l’a surnommée “La Grande Dame de la Champagne”.

7. Aujourd’hui encore, les bouteilles de sa marque se reconnaissent facilement grâce à leur fameuse étiquette jaune-orangé.

8. Son nom de jeune fille est Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, mais le monde entier la connaît sous le nom de la Veuve…
