I suggest, that given no additional context, that an argument can be made that ‘pretendre que’ in the negative is now a statement of fact, parallel to ‘doubter Québec in the negative. The speaker is stating the fact of Marie having no specific opinion, rather than a statement of what Marie may not opine. Subtle difference, but crucial, I think.
