un crayonIn the back to school exercise a pencil is translated as un crayon a papier. When I was at school 80 years ago, un crayon always meant a pencil. Would un crayon no longer be understood to mean a pencil when placed in une trousse ?

Why the S'Y?

I have just run across this sentence in my reading, and I don't understand how/why the adverbial pronoun is used:

The introductory sentence is part of a conversation:

-Vous ignorez qu'il est le propriétaire des parfums et des produits de beauté Mylène?

This is followed by the following sentence, which is the author's omnipotent observation about how little Maigret knew about perfumes:

Il s'y connaissait si peu en produits de beauté!

I understand what is being communicated, but I don't understand the grammar!

Please explain why the "s'y" construction is in this sentence.

I cannot see the difference between the "imperfect tense" and "avoir l'habitude" eg. [ J'avais l'habitude d'appartenir appartenir ] and [ j'appartenais ]

Significance of description of passe composeIs there any significance in the website's use of "passe compose" in some cases and "Le Passe Compose (conversational past)" in other cases?

Does the word "golfes" mean "springs"?

Don't these two sentences mean the same thing?"Nous avons DAVANTAGE d'enfants que lui" and "Nous avons PLUS D'enfants que lui" I put 'davantage' and it was marked wrong.
